Celebrate the Holiday Season in Portugal & Spain

Come the holiday season, both Spain and Portugal come to life with plenty of celebrations, traditions, festivals and excitement. To spite being winter, the locals traditionally take to the streets in collective gaiety, singing, dancing and partying at every opportunity.

The mood is contagious, and the decorations plentiful, instilling a festive atmosphere in cities across the Iberian Peninsula. Although the season is filled with the usual Holiday celebrations, each country has its own distinctive traditions that make them unique. Whether you are in Portugal or Spain for the holidays, you are guaranteed an excellent time. There is certainly no lack of things to do or festivals to attend and all visitors are welcomed with open arms.

Rembrandt, Painter of Stories

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival

Once a year the island of Tenerife comes together to celebrate the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival. Known for spectacular costumes, extraordinary festivities and lively carnival-goers, it rates second to those of Rio de Janeiro.

The street fiesta takes place on the Friday before Carnival Tuesday with a spectacular opening procession as the islanders and tourists gather in a mass outburst of collective gaiety.

Loule Carnival

Dating back to 1906, the Algarve has been celebrating the Loulé Carnival for more than 100 years, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Originally started in celebration of Shrove Tuesday, the carnival has grown into a brightly colored amalgamation of pagan springtime ceremonies, parades, partying and hundreds of papier-mâché flowers.
